Jan Purser

I am originally from Sydney, Australia, and I have been a Fremantle-based artist for over 20 years. I learnt from several Perth artists along the way in the early years after moving to Fremantle. I am also a naturopathic nutritionist in a busy practice and I find my regular painting and creating sessions the perfect balance to this other work.

My painting style varies from abstract to a more traditional or realistic style and I use acrylics, oils, pastels, pencils and pens depending on the subject I am painting and how I wish to describe it. I find much inspiration from the coast near home and from my travels within Australia and overseas.

Artist statement

All the aspects of nature can bring about a feeling of pure joy and wonder for me - from the colour and form of exquisite flowers to the power in storm clouds over the ocean, or the rugged texture of cliffs and gorges. I love the beauty in nature in all its forms and I love to describe this in some way through my paintings to inspire others. Painting is very therapeutic as I allow the creative process to guide the paintbrush and palette knife and I lose myself in the memories of where I have been and the feelings I experienced in that place. Hopefully that is passed on to others through my work.

My more recent addition to my art practice, paper mâché work, is a joy to me and I truly relish the creative process of bringing my pots, bowls and vases to life. The tactile nature of hand building is particularly enjoyable. So much so I have begun teaching workshops on paper mache.
